</epigraph>

<para xml:id="p2">Still looking for a GSM phone, I thought I’d ping the
<link xlink:href="http://www.attwireless.com/">AT&amp;T Wireless</link> website
again, to make sure I still couldn’t get service, as I’d been told last time
I checked, then call to find out why not. After all,
<link xlink:href="../../09/06/deadzone">I know</link> there’s a GSM antenna
around here.</para>

<para xml:id="p3">A lot can change in two months, I guess, because now I
<emphasis>can</emphasis> get service. Since there aren’t any GSM
alternatives out here, I went ahead and got a new mobile from AT&amp;T.</para>

<para xml:id="p4">I chose the
<link xlink:href="/knows/what#nokia-3650">Nokia 3650</link>
this time because I wanted an international phone and the promotional
offer was attractive. Besides, I wanted to have a second
Bluetooth<indexterm>

    </indexterm> device in
the house.</para>

<para xml:id="p5">With an hour or so of experience under my belt, Bluetooth seems pretty cool.
My existing Bluetooth device (a Palm
<link xlink:href="/knows/what#tungsten-t">Tungsten|T</link>) can talk to the phone, which
is cool in it’s own right, and use the phone’s GPRS service to surf the web.
</para>

<para xml:id="p6">So I got what I wanted, web surfing from my mobile, for a lot
less than it would have cost to replace the Palm with a unified device
like the Palm Tungsten|W or the Treo. For whatever reason the Treo wasn’t
offered under AT&amp;T GSM and the Tungsten|W, cool though it may be,
was way more than I was willing to invest.</para>

<para xml:id="p7">The 3650 is a little larger than I would have called ideal,
especially since it doesn’t replace my Palm, but I think it’ll work. I
have thirty days to decide.</para>
