<para xml:id="p1">I really enjoy cathedral architecture. The enormity of the structures
and the man years (man centuries) of effort devoted to building them is
always impressive. The interior spaces are impressive too irrespective of
the decoration or lack thereof.</para>

<para xml:id="p2">In Basel, Münster Cathedral is the center of the oldest part of town.
Dating from the twelfth century, it’s a mixture of romanesque architecture
and gothic style.</para>

<para xml:id="p3">Its facade is strikingly constructed almost entirely from red
sandstone.</para>

<para xml:id="p4">I think the sundials on the front and side of the right hand spire
are pretty cool.</para>

<para xml:id="p5">Inside, it’s a lovely, large quiet space.</para>

<para xml:id="p6">For 3 CHF, you can climb the left spire almost to the very top.</para>

<para xml:id="p7">They won’t let you go up by yourself, but I was lucky and slipped
in just after another family started the ascent. The concern is one of
safety, and it’s certainly the case that the stairs are steep, narrow,
and demonstrate a relaxed attitude towards hand rails and other safety
features.</para>

<para xml:id="p8">On the other hand, the stairs have been in use for several hundred
years at least. A little common sense and care will get you pretty far.
The clock mechanism is in the left spire.</para>
