I was mistaken. Twice.

First, my little rant about gconf-editor was misguided. In fact, the editor is just a GUI over the configuration files actually stored in ~/.gconf. Good!

Second, the open source VPN client can punch through the corporate firewall (and IT has blessed it so I won't get fired for doing so! :-). How'd I miss that? Thanks Scott!
