If You (Want To) Build It...

Volume 6, Issue 36; 16 Jun 2003

A small trickle of readers ask for more information about how this site is built, and about the software that I use to build it. Often they ask if the software is available as a package of some sort. Yes. And no.

Nothing ever becomes real till it is experienced—even a proverb is no proverb to you until your life has illustrated it.

A small trickle of readers ask for more information about how this site is built, and about the software that I use to build it. Often they ask if the software is available as a package of some sort.

The answer to that question is, “yes and no.

Yes, the software has been available since day one, it's all right here. Start with the Makefile and follow the dependencies. All the bits are online. (You'll need Perl and Python and CWM and an Apache web server and possibly jpegrdf; you can find those on the net.)

But, no, I'm not going to package it up. For one thing, I'm still learning and I want the freedom to tear things apart and rebuild them without concern for someone else's legacy. But mostly I find that I'm at the very edge of what I can accomplish in the way of personal projects. There just aren't enough hours in the day. I'm already neglecting a few things to find the time to write for this site. If I made a project out of maintaining this software for public consumption, something else would have to give and I'm still too attached to all the something else's to let go of one.

That said, if you get stuck, I'll try to be helpful.
