Any device that fits in a pocket/purse has a large advantage over any device that doesn't.—@timbray
@timbray On the other hand, any device with a usefully large screen has an advantage over any device that doesn't.—@ndw
@ndw @timbray. How about a device that fits in my pocket, with a 21" projected screen, and a roll-up keyboard?—@michaelhkay
@michaelhkay perhaps, but I expect I'll just get uses to carrying something slightly larger around.—@ndw
@michaelhkay @ndw @timbray pocket device: I've been able to do that for 3 yrs with any projector #nokian800—@docum3nt

In a conversation that started on Monday at 03:47am Massive squirrel? #birdfeeder—@dpawson
@dpawson Possibly. But I bet the smaller squirrels have already cleared out that feed.—@ndw

@larsga: And you'd consider the move to wine?43%. Sheesh.—@dpawson
@larsga Heh. I haven't even opened my bottle of Tactical Nuclear Penguin yet.—@ndw

The three most beautiful words in the English language may be "I love you"; the four most beautiful may be "On vehicle for delivery".—@ndw
@ndw you are so hyped for the unboxing, aren't you? ;)—@JeanKaplansky
@JeanKaplansky I never claimed it was still *in the box*...—@ndw
@ndw oh... You are torturing yourself intentionally, then?—@JeanKaplansky
@ndw Beautiful 3 words: "Let me help". See "The City on the Edge of Forever" cf.—@morbusiff
@morbusiff I did only say "may", but mostly now I'm sorry I didn't remember that line from ST: TOS. Shame on me.—@ndw

Watching the pain of twitter rate limiting at a conference when twitter thinks the entire conference is coming from one IP (NAT I guess)—@aspyker
@aspyker The limiting is per IP address, not per "user+IP address"? Or even just per user. That's just broken.—@ndw
@ndw I think the issue is most apps don't login for search so all searches are coming from one IP with no concept of a user login—@aspyker
@aspyker we learned how to avoid this with xmlprague and our twitterwall ... twitter also can be contacted to remove rate limiting—@xquery
@xquery Yeh, I think #www2010 just started doing that as well. Didn't realize that was the "fix"—@aspyker

Monday at 09:27am

@ndw seriously ROTFL ... "On vehicle for delivery". ... Just placed an order last night and already clicking on tracking status.—@DALDEI

Xbench of my MacBook Pro Core i7/256GB SSD compared w/ old MBP: Tweet back your own results!—@ebruchez
@ebruchez That SSD really helps, I see. Diffs between our i7's are interesting too—@ndw
@ndw Cool. The difference w/ SSD is stunning in small random read/write (but not unexpected).—@ebruchez
@ebruchez Yes. It'll be interesting to see how it performs when your disk has been completely filled at least once.—@ndw

New laptop. MacPorts dance or just freaking build everything from source by hand by myself?—@ndw
@ndw instead of #macports, you should definitely give #homebrew a try. see—@bnjmnbck
@ndw Don't do MacPorts, use Homebrew. Better by *far* and super-responsive.—@dethe
@dethe Ah, yes. Now I remember wanting to give that a try...—@ndw
@ndw `sudo port install [bla bla bla]` then go out for a seven hour walk with the dog. That's my standard thing...—@tommorris
@ndw Ubuntu on VMWare and just skip MacPorts ;)—@gcarothers
@gcarothers I hear ya.—@ndw
@ndw FWIW I used the Migration Assistant to move data around. Moved apps, user act, and "other stuff" (which included /opt).—@ebruchez
@ebruchez Interesting. I always assume accumulation of bitrot is bad and use a new machine as an opp to start over—@ndw
@ndw I would never have done that w/ Windows ;) Also I had recently rebuilt MacPorts & first cleaned apps dir a bit, then migrated.—@ebruchez

@ndw interesting ... re your joint presentation at #mluc10 with EXSLT 2.0, looking forward to seeing the fruit of that particular labour—@xquery
@xquery I think the title's actually XSLT 2.0 and... not EXSLT, though there is, in fact, a little EXSLT in there. And Mary's copresenting.—@ndw

@ndw yikes. Just thinking about it makes me want to drive or meet online—@JeanKaplansky
@JeanKaplansky Just don't drive anywhere within 100 miles of a US border.—@ndw
@ndw then i'm safe by approximate 50 miles...—@JeanKaplansky
@ndw how can people travel if TSA deep dives into their laptops/data/services. Case for a simple ipad and no data? :)—@fjhirsch

@ndw it may look like an attack to you, but thru his eyes i bet that bear was stoked to get his 'animal house' badge on foursquare :)—@peteaven
@peteaven You might be right, but I wish he'd chosen a different location for his 'chaos and destruction' badge.—@ndw

@avernet The whole shebang.—@ndw
@ndw @avernet Are you using TrueCrypt (if you can disclose that information ;) ?—@ebruchez
@ebruchez PGP Whole Disk encryption—@ndw
@ndw using FileVault? Will it slow access times ?—@sss4r
@sss4r Using PGP Desktop. @abcoates assures me that the performance impact isn't significant. I'll benchmark it in...about 8 1/2 hours...—@ndw

The change in behavior of C-n/C-p in Emacs 23 is...definitely a change. Get used to it, or revert the behavior?—@ndw
@ndw still using emacs 22 for Mac OS X, changing c-n/c-p seems rather radical if they work differently..—@fjhirsch
@fjhirsch C-n/C-p move by "screen lines" instead of "logical lines". Like most other editors, really. But different from before.—@ndw

@kendall both; "absolute control" is a misunderstanding of the medium; px, the mechanism, overrides my choice of body font size.—@dckc
@dckc As Web replaces print, some uses call for the 1000-year old typographic arts. Leading Web to its fullest potential includes typography—@kendall
@kendall @dckc wouldn't be the first time, or the last, I'm afraid. But respectfully, I don't agree in this case.—@ndw
@ndw So you think there's not a single legit use case for pixel-level precision typography on the Web, is that it?—@kendall
@kendall Don't get me wrong, I'm a type and letterpress geek. I wan't beauty, but I don't think pixel-level precision is the right path.—@ndw
@ndw Do you never sense an anti-beauty streak among some "only the information counts" types in geek world?—@kendall
@kendall I've always attributed all the ugliness to carelessness or cluelessness, not an intentionally anti-beauty streak. Beauty is hard.—@ndw
@ndw Can't disagree with any of that, but I think there's something else at play too often. But, eh, diminishing returns. :>—@kendall
@kendall I'm sure there are. About as many as there are for hand drawn, illuminated manuscripts in the modern age of dead tree typography.—@ndw
@ndw That's a very odd, but telling response. Scads and scads and scads of stuff today is hand drawn. Tons. But eff them, right? :>—@kendall
@kendall Scads of hand drawn books? Calligraphy by hand from beginning to end? We hang out in different bookstores, I think.—@ndw
@ndw I assume you don't have any children. Kids books are full of hand-drawn, illustrated & illuminated pages. & that's a big market.—@kendall
@kendall Ah. So we hang out in different sections of the bookstores then :-).—@ndw
@kendall Typography on the web isn't the same as ink on dead trees. Can't be. I concur with @dckc, esp. re. "absolute control"—@ndw
@ndw @dckc Yes, but you are both stone-cold, completely wrong. :> And it doesn't have to be "the same" to be a good that the Web shld enable—@kendall

In a conversation that started on Friday at 01:48pm

@dckc @ndw I won't be okay w/ Web killing print if it kills typography & beauty too. If you only can do that stuff in print, print == ghetto—@kendall
@kendall If the web's gonna kill print, it's going to do so with or without your ok. And mine.—@ndw
@ndw Well, duh, but that doesn't mean I can't bitch about it on Twitter, does it? If so, I'm gonna be really grouchy.—@kendall

Friday at 02:04pm

Sorry to @ndw & @dckc if I strayed over the line: just meant to disagree, not be disagreeable. :>—@kendall
